Trail Overview

Old Maverick Road is a more direct alternative from Panther Junction Road to Santa Elena Canyon. It is also the route to access Rattlesnake Mountain, Ocotillo Grove, and Terlingua Abaja campsites. It is primarily a washboard, gravel road providing fantastic views of the Chisos and desert flora. Please observe speed limits while traversing the road. Inclement weather can drastically change the nature of Big Bend trials. Please monitor the weather while in the area.

Heavy washboard 3/4 of the length, rattle your teeth stuff. some washouts but manageable, sand washes as well but fairly easy. Dry Creek bed crossings.

Nice simple trail with few mud puddles. I can see it get more difficult during and right after the rains as there is few creek crossings with sandy bottoms which could become though for 2wd even high clearance ones. Sign on entrance says 4WD required.
