Round Mountain Trail

Round Mountain Trail is a challenging ridgeline route in the North Cumberland OHV Riding Area’s New River Unit, best suited for riders and drivers looking for sustained climbs and technical Appalachian ridge terrain. Beginning near Bowling Gap in Scott County, Tennessee, the trail heads southwest before climbing onto the spine of Round Mountain and following the ridgeline as it curves northwest. The route features a mix of dirt, loose soil, and exposed rock that is typical of Cumberland Plateau ridge trails, with rutted hill sections that demand good throttle control and careful line selection. Frequent elevation changes and uneven tread give the trail its “more difficult” rating, making it a rewarding option for experienced ATV riders and capable high-clearance 4x4 vehicles traveling through the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area. Once on the ridge, the trail follows narrow corridors along the high ground with sections where erosion has exposed rock and deepened ruts on both climbs and descents. Loose rock and clay-based soil can become especially slick during or after rainfall, increasing the technical challenge on steeper grades. Passing opportunities can be limited in some ridgeline segments, and the remote terrain means riders should be prepared for self-recovery and longer response times if assistance is needed. Round Mountain Trail serves as an important backbone route in the New River Unit trail network, connecting the Bowling Gap area to surrounding ridge and hollow trails while providing a rugged off-road experience typical of the North Cumberland OHV system. Access requires a valid North Cumberland OHV permit issued by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and while the system is generally open year-round, weather and maintenance operations may occasionally affect trail conditions or access.
