Little Gassaway - Trail NF45

Little Gassaway (Forest Road 45) is an easy, scenic dirt road perfect for beginners and scenic drivers looking to explore the beautiful Cherokee National Forest near the Ocoee River. Stretching approximately 2.7 miles, this route serves as a main access point for those looking to reach the hiking trails within the Big Frog Wilderness Area. Beginning at the Ocoee Number Three Dam, the road winds gently through lush forest, offering a relaxing drive with minimal technical challenge. The trail climbs steadily from an elevation of 1,148 feet up to 2,015 feet, gaining about 910 feet of elevation along its course. Because the climb is gradual and the primary surface is well-maintained dirt, four-wheel-drive is not required under normal dry conditions, making it accessible to standard passenger vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs alike. Along the route, visitors will find convenient amenities and recreational opportunities, starting with the Thunder Rock Campground located right at the trailhead. This campground features 37 campsites suitable for pop-ups and recreational vehicles under 20 feet, with site 9 providing 30-amp electrical hookups while the rest remain non-electric. Cell service, particularly through Verizon, is relatively reliable along this route, which is a helpful convenience for navigation and safety.
