Trail Overview

Kimsey Mountain Trail on Old Highway 68 is one of the most underestimated trails around. Travel this in the winter and early spring and you will find out what I mean. Every turn greets you with a new view of Mountain landscapes as far as the eye can see. You will want to stop and just gaze out into the neighboring mountains around every turn. Be sure your gear is ready on this trail, because you could very likely come across downed trees or other obstacles on this trail.

Difficulty

The trail for the most part is a rocky rough ride. Washouts are common and better bring a chainsaw just in case.

History

This is the Old HWY 68 can only imagine the hardships it would have taken to get over this mountain back then.

The trail was open from Greasy Creek to Harbuck. The area got a few inches of heavy rain over the past two days. The ruts weren’t too bad, but I wouldn’t drive a nice car on it. I drove through after 3 p.m. and only saw one set of motorcycle tracks and one set of vehicle tracks. I passed one Ford Ranger going the other way.

A good trail that is lengthy and offers nice views. Getting out to the trail (from the Ditney Mtn end) is the hardest section but with decent ground clearance, most vehicles should be able to make it. Obstructions are cleared too.

Main trail is in great condition. It was raining all day when I went and got to about halfway through before turning around but even with the fog & rain it was an amazing ride.

Road is in great condition. Only a few wet spots. I encountered a Honda Accord along the way. Some sections are a bit rocky but not challenging.

To recap what others say, this is a great trail. It offers some of the best views one can hope to see. Overall, the trail is moderately narrow, very steep in some spots and has very steep edges, so be careful. Still, it is in decent shape and can be done in 2WD.

The trail is absolutely beautiful if your looking for a trail to go up a mountain. There are some nice views but you can’t really stop and pull off incase of other off roaders, you have to stop in the path you’re taking. It’s quite rough but not step. There are trees down that have been cut but you do have to get slow and smart with driving through some that are cut. There is a lot of old rock and washed out areas towards the middle and end. So if you have a stock vehicle that’s low be prepared to scuff your fenders or underside of your vehicle. We don’t so it wasn’t an issue for us to drive on but it’s very bumpy! The tree canopy is beautiful and the scene is pretty because it’s full of such mature growth around the trail.

Easy road but definitely a 3 due to some spots. Beautiful views to enjoy. Expect to drive about 3 hours from one point to the other.

Great easy ride. Has some little sections that require more attention but mostly a pleasant drive with beautiful scenery. Could be done easily in any stock Jeep
