Trail Overview

Ivydell Trail is an access road intended for experienced riders seeking a more technical challenge within the Sundquist Unit of North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area. Connecting Flatwoods Road with Ollis Creek Trail, this trail serves as a demanding entry into the interior trail network while traversing rugged Appalachian terrain. The route is primarily composed of dirt and native forest soil but features extended sections of exposed rock, uneven ground, and eroded surfaces that increase the technical nature of the ride. Steeper grades and narrow wooded corridors require careful throttle control and line choice, and the trail can become significantly more difficult after rainfall when slick rock, mud, and ruts develop along the route. Ivydell Trail functions as an important link between the Flatwoods Road access area and the broader North Cumberland OHV system, allowing riders to transition into routes such as Ollis Creek Trail and continue deeper into the trail network. Due to the trail’s difficult designation, riders should be prepared for steep climbs, rocky obstacles, and variable traction depending on weather conditions. The wildlife management area remains open during hunting seasons, though state regulations require at least 500 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange on the head and upper body when outside a vehicle or camp during deer and elk gun or muzzleloader seasons, and riders should remain aware that forestry or mining operations within the WMA may occasionally introduce heavy equipment traffic or changing trail conditions.

Difficulty

This trail is difficult because of the initial steep climb on the east end that is extremely rutted and troughed, limiting the width, with several rock obstacles/ledges. The majority of the rest of the trail is easier and more gradual, but there is always potential for changing trail conditions with ruts and mud. This is rated Most Difficult by the Cumberland Wildlife Management Area. Wet conditions will significantly increase the difficulty as the trail is mostly clay.
