Trail Overview

Herman Lowe Trail is a lightly trafficked and primitive OHV trail in the North Cumberland OHV Riding Area. It spurs off of the Shack Creek Trail, and connects to Smokey Creek Road. The trail is overgrown with grass and branches as it descends steeply from north to south. Expect lots of washouts and ruts, and narrow sections through the tight bushes. There will be lots of branches and brambles that reach out and grab you. It’s an old shelf road cut into the mountainside, with sections that are rockier. It crosses a few small streams and ravines – one of which was washed out and off-camber.

Difficulty

This is rated as Moderate by the North Cumberland WMA. This is an intermediate route because it is narrow, through tight bushes, with low overhead clearance from the low branches. A lot of the trail is just flat and overgrown, or over rolling hills, but the north end had a steep descent that was rutted and rocky, with a washed-out ravine crossing.
