Trail Overview
Fred’s Way Trail is a fun and moderate off-highway vehicle trail in the Sundquist Unit of the North Cumberland OHV Riding Area, near LaFollette, Tennessee. The majority of the trail is narrow because it goes through deeply trenched sections where the trail has been dug out several feet below the forest floor, with limited width between the dirt walls. Other sections are more like a shelf road, which is also narrow. There is a moderate rock/root obstacle right away on the north end as it climbs up several slick sandstone rock layers. The trail can become very slick as the clay/dirt surface holds onto a lot of moisture and becomes greasy, especially in the wet summer months. The trail goes up and over several rolling hills in the lush forest, with several steep climbs and descents. Expect frequent deep muddy ruts and mud puddles, and infrequent embedded boulders. There are several more gradual and wide sections that are easier, as well, throughout the 2.3-mile-long route.
Difficulty
This is rated Moderate by the Cumberland Wildlife Management Area. There are several intermediate features, such as deep muddy ruts, mud puddles, and short rock ledges. Wet conditions can significantly increase the difficulty, as the trail is mostly clay, dirt, and mud. The majority of this trail is very narrow and may not be passable by wider UTVs.
