Trail Overview

Fisherman Flats Road, also known as Custer State Park Road 2, is an easy two-lane gravel road that provides a connection through the grasslands of Custer State Park's Wildlife Loop area. The route begins off CSP 1, directly across from the Wildlife Loop Visitor Center and just north of Oak Draw Road (CSP 3). The well-maintained road travels through open prairie with great views and frequent opportunities to observe wildlife, including Custer State Park's free-roaming herd of nearly 1,500 bison. The route ends at the Fisherman Flats Horse Trail, where equestrian trails continue into the surrounding area. Fisherman Flats Road is suitable for most vehicles and offers a relaxing drive while exploring one of the park's most wildlife-rich areas. A Custer State Park pass is required to access this route.

History

Custer State Park was established in 1919 and is one of South Dakota's premier wildlife destinations. The park's bison herd, now numbering nearly 1,500 animals, descends from a small group introduced in 1914 and remains one of the nation's largest publicly owned herds.
