Mount Coolidge Road winds its way up the fire lookout mountain just off Highway 87, offering easy access to one of the best panoramic views in the central Black Hills. The road is gravel, maintained, and open to most vehicles during the summer season--though it can be washboarded and dusty. While most folks drive it for the views, there are a few tucked-away pullouts and small clearings near the base and along the lower slopes that work for dispersed camping if you're in early or late in the season. No real technical challenge here, but the elevation gain makes it a fun cruise. Popular for sunset runs, fire tower access, and quick stops during wildlife drives. Not remote, but worth it for the view alone. Pack in, pack out, leave no trace, and tread lightly.
History
The Mount Coolidge Lookout was built in 1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and has been watching over the central Black Hills ever since. Perched at 6,023 feet, the tower was named after President Calvin Coolidge, who used nearby Custer State Park as his "Summer White House" in 1927. The lookout was originally constructed as part of the early wildfire detection network, and it's still staffed seasonally today--making it one of the few active fire towers left in the region. From the top, you can see all the way to the Badlands on a clear day, with views of Black Elk Peak, the Needles, and Mount Rushmore in the distance. It's a piece of living history that still serves a purpose--quietly scanning the hills for smoke just like it did 80 years ago.
