North Indian Ford is a quiet, 6.5-mile route ideal for those looking to escape the crowds on easy dirt roads near Sisters, Oregon. Best suited for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes, this scenic track winds through the Deschutes National Forest north of Indian Ford Creek, offering a peaceful drive with multiple dispersed camping options. This trail features gentle terrain with elevations ranging from 3,239 feet to 3,685 feet, making for an approachable drive with minimal elevation changes. The primary surface consists of unpaved dirt and gravel, but drivers must be prepared for narrow passages.
Tight sections overgrown with manzanita can easily pinstripe larger vehicles, so narrower rigs and SxSs are highly recommended. Due to low traffic and heavy forest cover, downed trees are common along these Forest Service roads, requiring travelers to carry a chainsaw and trail clearing gear. The route is easily accessed off Akawa Butte Road, just north of Highway 20, providing convenient entry while still maintaining a remote feel.
