Trail Overview
The route starts as a single-lane forest road with light undergrowth before climbing steadily up the mountainside. The Skookum Pond Campground itself is a great place to stop, with clean restroom facilities, though visitors should be aware that algae blooms in the pond mean swimming and fishing are not recommended. Beyond the clearing, the trail becomes much narrower as it winds through dense forest. Overhanging trees, fallen branches, and encroaching vegetation make pinstriping almost unavoidable, particularly for full-size vehicles. The trail then descends into a small valley, where several potholes, rain-damaged sections, and washed-out areas require slower speeds and careful wheel placement. Despite its narrow and lightly traveled appearance, the trail does continue all the way through. Overall, this is an enjoyable forest trail with plenty of variety and is an excellent side trip for those staying at or visiting the campground. This trail is seasonally open from approximately May through November. Please verify current access restrictions before traveling. This user-maintained gravel trail begins at the beautiful Skookum Pond Campground and may be short, but it packs plenty of character into a relatively quick drive.
Difficulty
Narrow trail conditions, washouts, potholes, and heavy vegetation create the main challenges on this route.
