Trail Overview
Pushing north-northeast off FS 880, FS 5880220 acts as a short, out-and-back spur into the rugged backcountry of the Mt. Hood National Forest. The single-lane dirt and crushed gravel path runs under a high timber canopy of fir and hemlock, flanked by scattered native brush and rocky embankments before opening into a large, sun-baked clearing. This route primarily serves as access to the sprawling Frying Pan Quarry/Pit at the dead-end turnaround, though it also passes a couple of smaller, established dispersed campsites along the way. Earning an easy level 1 difficulty rating, the trail sees frequent use from recreationists looking to claim the scenic, wide-open quarry bowl for target shooting, staging off-road toys, or setting up a spacious and secluded basecamp.
Difficulty
Holding a level 1 rating, this path provides a smooth, unchallenging cruise that is accessible to all vehicle types under standard dry conditions. The packed gravel and dirt roadbed is highly consolidated, featuring gentle grade variations that stay well below 10%. The only minor disruptions are a few shallow potholes scattered along the way, easily absorbed by standard suspension or straddled without risking undercarriage clearance. The lane is wide enough to avoid any bothersome brush scraping the sides of the vehicle, and the enormous Frying Pan Quarry at the terminus provides practically unlimited flat ground for easy turnarounds.
