Trail Overview

Winding its way out of the North Santiam River valley, Cold Deck - FS 2234100 is a beautifully scenic, well-traveled dirt and gravel route managed by the Willamette National Forest. The overall environment offers a striking journey through a landscape actively recovering from the historic 2020 Beachie Creek and Lionshead Fires, transitioning from patches of green timber into an open hillside of towering silver snags. Accessed directly from the main canyon highway 22 corridor, the public frequently uses this steady, climbing road to explore the regenerating backcountry, find remote dispersed camping spots, or simply enjoy a quiet afternoon drive. As the road continuously gains elevation at a mild grade, the thinned tree canopy within the burn scar allows the landscape to dramatically open up, providing incredible, unobstructed views of the surrounding mountain peaks and the sprawling, recovering forest below.

Difficulty

Earning a mild Grade 2 difficulty rating, this is a consistent, graded gravel forest road that is completely free of deep water bars, large boulders, or technical rock steps. While specialized traction systems and elevated ground clearance are not required to complete the journey under normal seasonal conditions, drivers will need to navigate through occasional sections of loose gravel and bumpy washboards. These uneven patches are easily managed simply by reducing your speed and maintaining a steady, comfortable momentum so your suspension can absorb the vibrations. Because the route features several blind corners along the ascent, it is highly recommended to take those turns slowly, stay on your side of the path, and always remain alert for oncoming downhill traffic.
