Trail Overview

Coffeepot Crater Road is a short, scenic spur ideal for offroaders of all skill levels looking to explore the volcanic wonders of southeastern Oregon's Jordan Craters. Spanning approximately 1.3 miles, this easy route features a technical rating of 2 and consists of a rocky dirt surface that is accessible to most stock high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs. The trail begins off Blowout Reservoir Road and gently winds southeast through the high desert, losing around 150 feet of elevation as it approaches the crater. Drivers will navigate a relatively flat, straightforward path with minimal obstacles, making it a stress-free addition to any regional overland itinerary. The trail culminates at the base of Coffeepot Crater, a remarkably well-preserved spatter cone standing at 4,505 feet that marks the source of the surrounding Jordan Craters lava flow. Here, visitors can park and take a short, steep hike up to the crater rim to peer into the deep volcanic vent or explore the rugged basaltic formations. While the road itself is short, the destination offers ample opportunities for photography and geological exploration. High desert temperatures can be extreme during summer months, so spring and fall are the optimal times to visit. Visitors should be prepared with plenty of water, as there are no services or amenities in this remote BLM-managed area.
