Trail Overview
Running east to west between the OHV Abbott Road Quarry area and the 4610220 junction where the pavement begins, the 4610000 / Abbott East Section serves as a highly scenic, well-traveled out-and-back mountain route. This spectacular pathway acts as the literal border between the Roaring River Wilderness and the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness, winding along a mountainside through a dense, lush green forest canopy. Outdoor enthusiasts, campers, and motorized explorers flock to this lengthy dirt and gravel trail to access numerous branching off-road tracks, pristine hiking trailheads, picturesque dispersed campsites, and unique water features like natural springs and serene ponds, all while catching breathtaking glimpses of Mount Hood. The driving surface consists of a narrow dirt and gravel track that earns a severe Grade 4 difficulty rating due to extreme terrain degradation. The western portion presents a double-track layout with fresh, loose gravel, while the majority of the route narrows into a dirt single-track shelf road featuring medium-sized rocks, drainage ruts, and a small water crossing near Tumala Creek. Deeper into the drive near Salmon Lake, travelers will encounter the defining obstacle of the routeāa massive, steeply rutted washout that thoroughly tests equipment and nerves before continuing through the pristine timberland.
Difficulty
Earning a severe Grade 4 difficulty rating, this lengthy dirt and gravel out-and-back trail features extreme terrain changes that demand substantial ground clearance and highly capable four-wheel traction. While much of the track maintains a manageable grade of ten percent or less with standard hazards like medium embedded rocks, shallow drainage ruts, and a minor water crossing near Tumala Creek, a massive washout near the Salmon Lake area radically elevates the challenge. As described in the field notes, this intense, heavily rutted obstacle presents a daunting 40 to 45 percent grade that requires absolute precision to safely traverse. Drivers must proceed with extreme caution when approaching this severely eroded segment and thoughtfully assess the deep hillside trenches before committing to the climb or descent. For the remainder of the route, travelers should maintain a controlled, steady speed to navigate the scattered surface debris and confidently manage the narrow, exposed drop-offs inherent to this mountain shelf road.
