Trail Overview

Rough Butt (FS 4669) is a 2.2-mile point-to-point route that follows a single-lane forest road with few places to pass. The packed dirt and rock surface is not maintained and travels through heavily forested terrain with a moderate difficulty rating. The route features a beautiful waterfall, large rocks, muddy ruts, and terrain that more than lives up to its reputation, as noted by a Forest Service ranger. Several stream crossings are encountered along the way, including one significant crossing that may require careful assessment before proceeding. Pinstripes are likely as vegetation crowds portions of the route, and the combination of rocky terrain, muddy sections, and water crossings requires careful vehicle placement. The trail ends at the Rough Butt Connector trailhead. Access is restricted to highway-legal vehicles only.
