Trail Overview

Piney Mountain Flats (FS 4666), part of the Rough Butt trail complex, is a 0.6-mile point-to-point route that follows a single-lane forest road with few places to pass. The packed dirt and rock surface is not maintained and travels through heavily forested terrain with an easy difficulty rating. Compared with Rough Butt and Rough Butt Connector, this section of the trail system provides a noticeably less demanding drive while retaining the same remote forest character. Relatively smooth conditions and only mild erosion make for straightforward travel before reaching the Hunt Cabin (FS 4666A) trailhead, where the route concludes. Although easier than the adjoining roads, drivers should still expect an unimproved forest road typical of this trail complex. Access is restricted to highway-legal vehicles only.
