Trail Overview
Dutch John (FS 553) is a major Forest Service road providing direct access from the eastern national forest entrance, via Moccasin Creek (FS 576), to southeastern OHV trails such as Dickey Bell (FS 91), Falls Dam (FS 96), and Rocky Mount Loop (FS 92). This forest service road features small rocks, ruts, and scattered debris throughout. Multiple trailheads and crossings are present along the route, starting with Rocky Mount Loop, which offers an ideal staging area for trail preparation or primitive camping. Another large trailhead located midway serves as excellent trailer parking, and the trail ultimately ends at Flatwoods Trailhead, one of the largest dedicated parking areas in Uwharrie National Forest.
Difficulty
A few small ruts, loose rocks, and debris are generally present along the trail, especially depending on recent weather and the amount of traffic. These obstacles along the trail are generally no larger than a couple of inches tall, making it accessible for the majority of vehicles, though some low-ground-clearance vehicles may want to exercise caution.
