Trail Overview

Dickey Bell is the second most challenging trail in Uwharrie National Forest and the only Jeep Badge of Honor Trail in North Carolina. The majority of the trail is an easy trail with small humps that could result in lower ground clearance vehicles bottoming out or scraping dirt. The major obstacle is a large rocky hillclimb, with large ledges, boulders, and loose gaps. There are a variety of lines to take ranging from moderate to very difficult. It should be noted on the far left of the trail there is a worn section that was used as a bypass, however, it is blocked halfway through and should not be used anymore as it is not part of the trail. This obstacle has a newly created scenic bypass that is easy with no obstacles. There is an optional challenge located a short way down the road from the trailhead that is extremely tight, has a few sharp large ledges, and can be very slick even when the rest of the trails are dry.

Difficulty

The trail is rated a 7 even though the main obstacle does have a bypass. Some of the humps leading up to the obstacle may result in minor scraping in low or long vehicles. The hill climb has many obstacles that are over 2 feet, with scattered loose rocks, and can be very slippery depending on recent rainfall.

This trail was a lot of fun. I was able to complete even the hard parts without a spotter in stock bronco with 35 inch tires. Trail was extremely crowded with a lot of great people and a variety of vehicles.

Decided not to take the new bypass so I did the more difficult area and well my spotter was kind of new. And gave me a bad spot and I got stuck bad line for me And I’m on a Jeep Rubicon JL with a 2 1/2 inch lift. Well, my winch works perfectly. And stock 33 inch tires. Would’ve made it with no problem with the 35. Well, my winch works perfectly. Other than that, everything was amazing.

Trail was in great shape with just enough moisture in the dirt to keep the dust down but not enough to make things slick. Rocky spots were generally dry enough to reduce or eliminate tire slip. Spring has arrived with a good smattering of flowering plants and lots of deep green foliage. Nice cool day to run the trail and earn a Jeep Badge of Honor!

85% of the trail was nothing, probably could do it in 2WD. What gives this trail the ranking was the end, if running north-south, it the beginning if running south-north. Very technical, very complex. I ran south-north so ended with the portion. Just a hope and a prayer. Take a good line, go slow, should be ok. JKU on 35s, no lockers.
