Trail Overview

Dutch John is one of the harder trails within the Uwarrie National Forest, part of the "Dirty Ds" in Uwharrie. It offers a variety of obstacles ranging from rolling humps to small stream crossings and a couple of technical hill climbs and descents. The trail can be done on dirt bikes, ATVs, and other off-roading vehicles, although high ground clearance is required. Along the trail leading to and from the main climbs are optional obstacles. These do have bypasses, but the main climbs do not. When the trail is wet, it can offer a challenge for everyone;when dry, it provides enough of a challenge for advanced drivers while still being low risk for the new adventurers.

Entered at the main trailhead. DJ delivered! Would not recco in a stock vehicle. The majority of the trail is a green but there are four distinct sections that bump this one up to moderate or hard. Depending on which end you begin will determine if the obstacles are climbs or descents. If you enter at the trailhead, you will descend a section of fairly steep track with tall walls on both sides. This section is all loose small boulder wash. Descending was no issue. Climbing could be a challenge bc of the grade and loose rock. Next there is a rock climb at the base of a creek that has no bypass. The soil is eroded from this section making it all exposed rock faces that are very uneven. Not super large but may need a spotter or walk it to find a line. The next area is a descent where going left will take you down a hard line of exposed rock with ruts and small ledges. Spotter here. Right for the bypass. Last the dog leg mud hole that has a stupid steep, rutted exit. Avoid by going hard right and up just before

One of the more difficult trails in the Uwharrie trail system. Starting from the Dutch John trailhead, you do down most of the major obstacles making this trail moderate. If you start from the other end it is definitely more difficult.

First day back since the opening. There were a few surprising deep mud holes on Dutch John that I avoided, but others got stuck in. Overall it was a great ride. Seemed a little rougher and technical in some places from last year, which I liked. We had a lot of fun!

Nice day. Very rocky and dusty. This is one of the hard “D” trails. I’m lifted on 37s so it was ok. Saw some nice built Tacomas and Broncos on it. You’ll need a spotter.

Not for the faint of heart. At least not during an all day downpour, in daily drivers. All vehicles got out, with some winching, after hours in the rain on the main climb. Gladiators were lifted on 35’s. Very slick, muddy conditions. Definitely want a shot at it when it’s dry.
