Trail Overview
22A is a short spur that connects Trail 22 to the Comales Canyon Cutoff Trail. It goes through a high alpine forest of white firs covered in moss, on a dirt ATV path that is consistently rocky, with large, embedded chunky rocks in the trail that make it a slow and bumbling ride. The trail is a steep ascent from north to south, gaining 700 feet in elevation over 1.2 miles. The rocks are super chunky and ping you around. It’s slightly off-camber, but there aren’t any major ledges; it’s just steep and rocky, with slick roots mixed in. The steepest part is on the south end during a tight and rocky climb that weaves sharply through the trees; that would be a challenge for ATVs. Watch out for downed logs or sharp branches sticking out into the trail, although many of the downed logs were already cut (as of late summer 2026). There are a few tighter spots in the trees, and some of the log cuts are quite narrow, so it might be too narrow for 50” ATVs in some spots. It’s primitive in some spots as well, overgrown with grass, and weaving tightly through the trees. This trail is open to motorized use from 3/15 to 11/15.
Difficulty
This is an intermediate route, as it is constantly covered in loose and embedded rocks of all sizes. It’s very steep in spots, with tight turns through the trees. ATVs should proceed with caution, as it is quite narrow in spots, potentially too narrow for 50” vehicles.
