Trail Overview
Trail 19A is a rocky ATV trail through the Carson National Forest, with constant embedded and loose rocks of all sizes, a couple of rocky stream crossings, and several steep and rutted climbs and descents. While many of the ATV trails in this trail system have narrow segments that make the trails more suited to dirt bikes and nearly impassable to ATVs, this one is actually wide enough for ATVs throughout the whole route – but ATVers should still expect a rugged and rocky experience. It’s a 2.7-mile-long trail that connects Rito Angostura Trail to Comales Cutoff Trail, which is likely too narrow for ATVs to continue all the way through. Halfway through Agua Piedra Trail, riders can take the spur 19D up to the Knob overlook for a great view of the surrounding mountains. From the east entrance of Agua Piedra, the trail climbs up 500 feet over a mile to the saddle at the intersection with 19D. This initial climb has several deeply rutted sections where the trail is more off-camber and goes through a rock garden, with big, uneven embedded boulders. After the saddle, it descends for the rest of the route, dropping over 1,000 feet in elevation, with the steepest and rockiest descent being right after the saddle. It goes through a burn area, where downed logs are more likely. This trail is open to motorized use from 3/15 to 11/15.
Difficulty
This is an intermediate route due to rocky challenges throughout the route. Expect steep and rutted climbs covered in loose rock that will be a test of traction, plus a couple of technical rocky stream crossings. The trail has deep ruts in spots, rock gardens, and the potential for downed logs in the burn area.
