Slope to Slope

Slope to Slope is a scenic, approximately 30-mile point-to-point offroad route tailored for intermediate four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs, connecting Sipapu Ski Resort on the south to the vicinity of Angel Fire Ski Resort on the north. Traversing the scenic Sangre de Cristo Mountains within the Carson National Forest, this trail climbs from an elevation of 8,561 feet to a high point of 11,236 feet, offering over 3,700 feet of cumulative elevation gain. The northern portion of the trail winds through dense pine forests, keeping scenery framed until higher elevations reveal panoramic views of sweeping mountain draws. Driving conditions are moderately challenging with a technical rating of 4, featuring a mix of unpaved surfaces, a small section of large buried rock, and numerous puddles that vary in depth depending on seasonal runoff. Offroaders will find ample opportunities for overnight stays, with developed campsites situated at the southern terminus near Sipapu and plentiful primitive dispersed camping options scattered along the higher ridges. An optional side trip leads to Huero Lake, providing a scenic spot for a quick break or fishing. Due to the high elevations, heavy winter snowfall and persistent drifts or slides can close the passage rapidly and keep it blocked well past the typical spring thaw. Travelers should ensure their four-wheel-drive vehicles or SxSs are equipped to handle changing weather, deep puddles, and rocky obstacles along this high-country trek.
