Trail Overview
Bear Canyon is an easy ATV trail in the Carson National Forest that connects Trail 22 to Forest Road 1877. It is a wide, single-lane, road-width path that looks like it’s been bulldozed as a fire break and for logging. There are big log piles off to the side of the trail, and clear-cut hillsides. It goes through a scenic forest of pines and aspens at high elevation, gaining over 1,000 feet throughout the 1.8-mile-long route. It’s mostly gradual, but gets steeper near the east end; it’s still easy since it’s so wide and more like a road. The trail surface is mostly dirt, with shallow ruts that are filled in with loose rocks, which makes it slightly more technical. This trail is open to motorized use from 3/15 to 11/15.
Difficulty
This is an easy route because it is mostly a road that has been widened for logging. It is steep, with lots of loose rocks, but no major obstacles. Expect ruts and high-elevation challenges such as changing weather conditions, downed logs, or mud.
