Trail Overview

This route branches off Forest Service Road 376 past the Gilman Tunnels and follows part of the Old Peggy Mesa Road. The trail is generally easy, with a few moderate rocks near the start and occasional rocky patches further along. When wet, the surface can become slick with muddy ruts. A stock 4x4 with slightly larger tires can complete the run with little difficulty. Carrying a saw or chainsaw is recommended, as downed trees are common.

Difficulty

This trail is narrow with several low-hanging trees that may require trimming, so carrying a chainsaw is recommended. At certain times of the year, water crossings will also be present along the route.

My son and I really enjoyed this trail. A couple of fairly rocky sections, but just take it slow and it’s not a problem. Really nice to get out of heat as 90% of trail is in timber

Did the entire trail starting at 10:45 am at the south end at Deer Creek, just past the Gilman Tunnels, taking 239 southwest. Lots of rocky spots particularly on 239. Highly suggest deflating tires and watching lines to take large rocks under tires. The road was pretty well maintains with signs of recent clearing of fallen trees, particularly through the Jemez Pueblo portion. Didn't see a soul until we got to the junction of 534 and 376H on the north end. We followed all the way to FS376 junction and followed that south back to the starting point passing Deer Creek around 3:45 pm where we stopped to reinflate our tires. Beautiful ride. Highly recommend. Stock TRD Offroad Taco, tires at 25psi and 4WD High throughout.
