Trail Overview

Glorieta Baldy is a trail on the South end of the Pecos Mountain area featuring numerous camp sites and an expansive view of the Pecos/Glorieta area. The trail starts at the back of a neighborhood on La Cueva road, and ascends Glorieta Baldy from there. The first half of the trail is open, with wide roads and a gentle slope. This section shows evidence of fire, with reduced tree cover and undergrowth. Once the trail crosses an old stream bed, the route ascends to the baldy through a pine forest, with occasional aspens and extensive wildflowers. At the top there is an old fire lookout tower, along with a view point with picnic tables and vault toilets.

Difficulty

The trail is not difficult, but does have a couple of steeper sections that would make me hesitate about taking a Subaru or other AWD vehicle with a CVT up this trail. Additionally, during monsoon season the clay like dirt can get slippery very quickly. Its mostly a 2 until the creek bed, and then escalates somewhat from there.

Not bad till the last half mile. Experienced 18-20in ruts on the last section with some muddy and water filled sections that were deeper than expected. Otherwise it’s an easy trail, but I would not try the last section without 4x4 and some clearance.

Trail was open and dry. We stayed at one of the camp sites. It was windy and cold but the views were beautiful.

The only reason I rated this trail a 4 is because of the time of year. The bottom 3rd of the trail was easy loose dirt. The ruts were easy enough to navigate if you have driven off road before. The ice and snow was an easy climb up but when descending the trail that’s where it got a little tricky. The snow/ice was packed down so even at a crawl the truck was sliding down the trail just following the wheel marks. There was snow build up on both sides of the trail so I wasn’t worried about going off the trail I just let the truck slide until I hit some dirt for traction.

Trail was deteriorated and had deep ruts with large rocks about 5 miles in. A high clearance 4x4 would be required to proceed further. Other than that, the trail was nice and the weather was good.

Majority of the trail up to the first Glorieta Baldy point on the trail map was basically paved (packed dirt). Few sections that got a bit more difficult as you went towards the top. Definitely need a bit of high clearance due to the ruts but great trail.

First 8-10 miles was pretty easy. This is my first decent offroad trail I’ve ever done. Pretty solid, some decent ruts that weren’t to big of an issue. Just got done raining in the morning so a little water. Nothing major to note I would say.

Easy trail, some parts almost paved. 4WD needed though, mildly wet but enough to make your ride slide around in one part that is by the beginning. Couple of puddles. Didn’t see any other vehicles, did see one couple hiking. I only made it 3/4 of the way. There was a rut that was too deep for comfort and I was alone without a winch. One car wide at some points. Tried some of the trails that stem from the main road but they only go so far as it’s too overgrown right now.

Easy drive in 2wd. Picnic tables at top good for lunch break.

Most of the trail was fairly easy, about a 2, but there’s a couple spots with deep ruts, a foot to foot and a half deep and wide. The trail gets progressively harder as you get to the top, especially the last quarter. Fair amount of fallen trees protruding into the road, and very few places to pass or turn around. With that being said, the view is totally worth it at the top with a place to turn around, bathrooms, and tables.
