Trail Overview
FS 195W is a short access trail into the Elephant Rock trail system, but this is not the main entrance into the system, and riders will need to be street legal to connect to it on Highway 38. It starts as a wide road-width trail on pea-gravel that climbs up into the forest from the highway. It is unmarked and does not have any trail signs at the beginning. After a quarter mile, it drops into a rutted-out wash that looks like it has had severe flooding in the past – the wash is full of large boulders and small loose rock, with uprooted trees, flanked by tall dirt walls. After .4 miles, the wash intersects with FS 195S, but due to the flood damage, there is no clear indication of where the trail used to be going eastward. However, on the west side, there is a soft dirt bank a few feet high that leads to the old shelf road that is trail FS 195S going westward. Getting up this dirt embankment will be a challenge for most riders or will require help from a buddy.
Difficulty
This is an easy trail because it just rides through a mostly flat and wide wash. The first half of the trail is just a gravel road with a slight incline. The second half of the trail drops into the washed-out ravine, but it is wide. You have to ride over a few boulders, but it is easy to pick a good path through the wide wash.
