Trail Overview

Bull Creek is one of the most beautiful drives I've ever been on. Driving past the Santa Fe National Forest off Interstate 40, I knew that taking the time to explore this area was going to be worth it. As you start up Bull Creek 86, you start a pretty steep climb that's on a single-lane dirt road that has some larger rocks on it. I definitely wouldn't suggest a low-clearance vehicle as there are boulders that could do some damage. Subaru's will do just fine on this trail. There are several areas to camp but one in particular was really nice and had some nice areas to hike to go see some views of the local mountains. Turkey can be heard in the forest at dawn and dusk. This area is a timber box so be very careful with fires. There are very few water sources or creeks however, firewood is plentiful in this area and can be found and collected pretty much the whole route. The town of Pecos is at the base and has a gas station and a dollar general for restocking supplies before you head up the mountain. Bring your camera as there are several scenic areas to pull off and take pictures of the beautiful Santa Fe National Forest.

Difficulty

Expect steep grades, windy roads, steep drop-offs, and larger rocks. The road may be impassable during the winter months and after heavy rainfall.

History

A local historic place to visit is called The Forked Lightning Ranch, here you will learn about the history of the Spanish settlers and the change to the U.S. acquiring the land in 1845. Here is a website on the history of this area. https://www.nps.gov/peco/learn/historyculture/the-forked-lightning-ranch.htm

There was a locked gate 5.3 miles from the end of the trail. So it made for a pretty boring ride was hoping to gain some more height and views only saw a couple views from the road up to that point. Also I tried going to Bull falls and was stopped by a father and son that said it was a private road and to turn around and leave.
