Trail Overview

This trail offers a little bit of everything. It starts as a dirt/gravel road with some washouts and a couple of steep climbs. You will pass through a sand pit that can be quite soft in the summertime. After the sand, there are approximately 2 miles of rock garden. If you end up joining Jumbo Grade at the summit, you can take it to Virginia City or down to Washoe Valley. A stock 4x4 can make it if it has decent ground clearance. It can be quite narrow in spots, so if you do not want brush scratches, it could be quite a challenge. There are beautiful mountain views in all directions. This trail is open year-round, but the upper portions could be impassable in the winter.

It’s pretty riding up there, but much more sandy than I had anticipated. Maybe we just never found the more traditional dirt roads, but the ones we did fine def were majority sand. Great for SXS, but a little squirly for casual dirtbikes. With that said, the views are fantastic.

We started in New Washoe City and ran the trail up to the Jumbo Grade and then into Gold Hill. The trail was in good shape, no snow or mud. It is a moderate trail with some sandy areas that were easily passable. The rocky area in the mid area of the trail requires some line picking but was not difficult. We didn't drag or scrape at all and never used a locker. A stock Jeep should be able to make it with reasonable line choices. There was one short off camber section that was required to get around a huge boulder that feels a little uneasy. It's a fun trail. We were in a 2 door JL Rubicon on 35's and a 2.5" lift.

Great little route starts off with some spider-webbed sand trails through the hills with a couple skeleton vehicles some folks have used for target practice. Up past some twisties, you get into some rockier sections and there’s a stretch of trail where you have to be a little more deliberate with your path selection to avoid banging your tie rods or bottoming if not in a high clearance. This is the only section of the trail that makes it a 4 rating in my opinion but once through that smaller (and quite fun) section, it’s clear sailing through a nice little dune section with some fun and deeper verticals before meeting with some other hills. We actually met up with Jumbo Grade and shot up into the backside of VC for a quick jaunt before coming back just before sunset. All in all was a pretty nice little ride. As a note: tighten down your LED whip mounts/bolts if equipped. Had a couple of mine rattle out in the rougher sections (fair warning); or use blue loctite. Would hate for you to lose em. Have fun!

Beautiful views with a cool sandpit and an old truck for shooting. Further up the trail are some moderate rocky obstacles that most high clearance vehicles can handle with some intermediate skills. Where it connects to the other trail is a very steep grade that is easy to cross. After that it is mostly dirt roads till you hit a mining camp and eventually Virginia City.

I really enjoyed this trail heading up to Virginia City, didn’t see any people until merging with jumbo grade. Nothing too difficult from a technical standpoint, but some fun, steep hills and rock to crawl over and amazing views! After this trail, I went through Virginia City to the petroglyphs Trail, and so I had a full day of super Wheeling!
