Trail Overview

This is a highly enjoyable offshoot that provides excellent access to the valley's scenic side canyons. At the beginning of the trail is a tree-shaded dispersed campsite. From there, the trail immediately engages drivers with a water crossing, followed by a steep little hill climb and a fun rock obstacle that tests your vehicle's articulation and clearance. Once past the rocks, the trail mellows out as it bumps deeper into the hills. You are rewarded with the sights and sounds of Aspen groves rustling in the breeze, fascinating rock formations, and outstanding panoramic views of both the mountains and the valley below. The main route features a couple of small offshoots to explore before dead-ending at a clearing. While this terminus would make a great campsite if it were flat, it serves perfectly as a backcountry trailhead for further exploration on foot into the canyons. Depending on the season, the trail is lined with blooming cacti and wildflowers, and offers great chances to spot local wildlife. There is no cellular service on this trail. It is recommended to download offline maps before adventuring into this area.

Difficulty

The trail features a water crossing, a short steep hill climb, and a notable rock obstacle. Vehicles with smaller tires will need careful line negotiation or locking differentials, while rigs with 35-inch tires or larger should navigate it with minimal difficulty. The remainder of the trail is relatively easy and bumpy.

History

In the high-desert mountains of Nevada, Aspen groves were historically vital waypoints for early pioneers, prospectors, and Basque sheepherders, as they reliably indicate the presence of year-round or seasonal water sources. Trails like this offshoot likely began as rough game trails that early settlers later used to push deeper into the canyons to graze livestock or survey rock formations for valuable minerals.
