Trail Overview
This scenic route transitions beautifully from open desert to dense mountain timber. The trail begins on the valley floor, surrounded by sagebrush, offering expansive, sweeping views across the valley. As you continue and follow a trickling creek bed, the environment shifts dramatically into a thick, shaded forest of pinyon pine, aspen, and juniper, accented by vibrant pops of seasonal wildflowers. The upper section of the trail climbs steadily along the hillside into the mountains, eventually branching into a network of smaller trails, with the option to drop down to Harrison Pass. The main trail concludes at a magnificent flat clearing with breathtaking views of a boulder-strewn hillside and a clear sightline across the valley to Green Mountain and the Tipton Peaks in the Ruby Mountain Wilderness. The easy lower section has scattered campsites accessible for a tent trailer. However, once you reach the tree line, the trail narrows significantly, making it impossible to maneuver or turn around a trailer. Due to narrow passages, deep washouts, and trail boulders in the upper elevations, full-size rigs are not recommended past the lower valley. The top of the trail features a spiderweb of smaller routes and a connector to Harrison Pass; pay close attention to your route tracking if you choose to explore further. There is zero cell service in this canyon or at the top of the pass. Downloading offline maps for this area is recommended.
Difficulty
The lower section is easy, but the rating increases to a 3 as you climb higher. The upper sections feature steep hill climbs and descents, off-camber spots, deep washouts/ruts, and boulders placed in the middle of the trail that require careful tire placement.
