Trail Overview
If running this trail from east to west, the route kicks off with a short, steep climb that serves as a mere warm-up. Just around the corner, drivers are met with a massive, loose, and incredibly steep hill climb. Conquering this ascent rewards you with access to a stunning high-altitude meadow. From there, the trail becomes a scenic "roller coaster," twisting, turning, rising, and falling along the ridgelines and over the mountain peaks. It provides an outstanding scenic tour of the northern end of the mountain range with spectacular views dropping off on either side. The route ultimately comes to a hard stop at a heavily secured cattle gate with padlocks on both ends. Fortunately, just before this dead end, you can hop onto the Jack 3 trail. This connector runs down to the Jack Creek Campground and the main Jack Creek North Fork Trail, which serves as a primary artery for further exploration in the area. This is an active open-range grazing area. While you may encounter signage for missing or damaged gates (such as the entrance gate and adjacent fencing noted during a recent run), standard trail etiquette applies: leave all intact gates exactly as you found them. There is absolutely no cell service on this trail, so ensure all maps are downloaded before heading out. The high plains and meadows along the top of the ridge offer several excellent, flat spots that work perfectly for dispersed camping.
Difficulty
While the majority of the trail surface is relatively mild (around a 2) with no severe obstacles or large boulders, the rating is elevated by incredibly long, loose, and very steep hill climbs and descents. Proper off-road techniques, including airing down tires, using low gear, and utilizing engine braking on descents, are required.
