Chicken 5 - FS 16214

This trail runs directly up the ridgeline just north of Chicken Creek. It is a steep climb that rewards drivers with spectacular panoramic views down both sides of the ridge. The trail ends at the very top at a scenic little camping spot with just enough room to turn a couple of rigs around. While the ascent is beautiful, the real payoff is on the descent, where the landscape opens up in every direction. To the west, you are treated to amazing rocky spires and a super jagged ridgeline, while the eastern view showcases rolling hills densely dotted with trees heading deeper into the mountains. The loose rocky climb near the top requires technical driving and proper vehicle setup (aired-down tires and 4-Low). The technical difficulty is brief but demands respect, though it is well worth it for the gorgeous views at the summit. There is zero cell service on this route, so download maps in advance. The turnaround spot at the summit serves as a highly scenic, albeit compact, dispersed camping spot for a small group.
