Trail Overview

This is a technical, unmaintained route that offers a firsthand look at the unforgiving nature of the Great Basin wilderness. This trail is defined by heavy water damage and significant natural reclamation. Approaching from the southern entrance near Willow Creek Road, drivers are immediately met with a massive washout and extreme overgrowth that effectively blocks most passage. However, entering from the 4 Mile Basin Road side offers approximately 2 miles of scenic travel through beautiful open plains and striking rock formations before the terrain becomes more rugged. The driving experience becomes high-intensity once you enter the canyon wash. The trail is characterized by large, jagged boulders that require constant technical maneuvering and precise tire placement. As you push deeper, the wash bed narrows into a dramatic "V-shaped" corridor where the trail has been almost entirely excavated by seasonal floods. There is evidence of significant "braiding" where previous travelers have pushed into the dense brush to bypass obstacles, but the official track is in desperate need of maintenance. For those with technical rigs, the reward is a sense of total isolation among magnificent geological features, but be prepared for a physically demanding crawl. Mandatory Turnaround: For full-size vehicles, the trail becomes effectively impassable at the terminus of this recording. Do not attempt to push further unless you are in a dedicated narrow-body rock crawler or on a motorcycle. Expect zero cell service throughout Georges Canyon. The deep canyon walls and high ridges block all signals. Download offline maps before leaving the Tonopah area.

Difficulty

Rated a 4 due to the frequency of large rock obstacles and the severe erosion within the wash. Contact with rock sliders and undercarriage components is highly likely. Severe paint damage is a near-certainty. The trail is heavily overgrown, and the "bypass" braids require pushing through stiff desert scrub.
