Trail Overview

Dead Man Gulch is a fast, flowy 5.1-mile dirt connector road linking Montana Highway 434 and U.S. Highway 287, offering a scenic and dirt-friendly alternative to pavement for adventure motorcycle riders, four-wheel-drive vehicles, and SxSs. Originally a rutted, eroded track, the route has been recently graded, transforming it into a smooth, fast-paced ranch road that traverses open, rolling hillsides. With elevations ranging between 3,925 feet and 4,660 feet, travelers can expect a generally gentle descent of roughly 630 feet when traveling from west to east, with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding Montana landscape and Limekiln Mountain to the southwest. While rated as a level 2 difficulty under dry conditions, this route features sections with clay-heavy soils that quickly turn into extremely greasy mud when wet. Driving on this road during or immediately after rain can make it completely impassable, risking severe rutting and trail damage; travelers are strongly urged to avoid the route in wet conditions to respect local property owners and maintain public access. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dual-sport or adventure motorcycles will easily handle the dry dirt surface, making it an excellent scenic connection or part of a larger regional offroad loop.

Would have thought it would have been muddy with the rains we’ve been having locally, but not at all. If it gets wet, though, I agree it would easily become impassable on a bike.

Dusty road, a couple rough spots. Looks like it recently had heavy equipment maintenance.

Just a dirt road/trail with some mildly washed out areas. You could drive any vehicle on this. Beautiful views though.
