Trail Overview

The Adel Mountains are a geologist's dream to experience. Filled with small laccoliths and dikes, this igneous complex dates to approximately 65 million years ago. The resulting topography is that of rolling hills, lush had meadow valleys, and prominent igneous ridges and buttes. A beautiful vista is around every corner, so keep that camera handy. Besides the natural beauty of the landscape, the highlight of this route is experiencing the St. Peters Mission historical site. Built before Montana became a state, it was the cradle of Christianity amongst the wilds of the western frontier and the Blackfeet Indians.

Difficulty

The road is decently maintained in the summer but can be quite challenging even with a few inches of snow. Watch for free ranging cattle.

Be aware of the traffic pattern at the small bridge. There are staggered jersey barriers. We saw a one ton Chevy navigate it. Easy run, both ways. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.. no need for 4wd. One loose section, but enough traction to pass it. Dust on the way out to 287 fromm 15. On the way back three were cattle on the roadway, but there were warning signs, and cattle grates at through gates. We had a little snow on the way out. Clear skies, but wet conditions on the way back towards 15. Nice road.

I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too muddy. Quite a bit of rain in the area the last couple of days, but dirt sections of the road were still easily passable on a motorcycle. I can see if it got too wet, a bike would have a hard time getting through, especially with a newbie off-roader like me. Really good trail for beginner riders!

Easy dirt road most of the time. Little bit on “off-roading” then back to road. Did this then went to the gulch trail next to it

Great road/trail for wildlife viewing! I saw range cattle, deer, and was lucky enough to see a herd of Big Horn sheep! No vehicles over 30ft long can take this trail. There are serpentines on either side of a bridge crossing that are a little tight (to reduce the amount of weight of the vehicles driving over it). Definitely recommend this easy road/trail, but make sure you have a camera ready if you want to catch some wildlife!
