Trail Overview
Grassy Hollow (FS 3714) is a natural gravel and dirt forest service road within the Poplar Bluff Unit of Mark Twain National Forest. Starting from County Road 415, heading east into the dense forest, going down into the valley bottom, crossing a small creek with large cobbles and natural rock, to climb back up hill to the crossing with the spur road Bluegrass FS 3528, this is where the Grassy Hollow turns south riding over mild elevation changes, first pointed towards and then turning to parallel along US-60, up to the point it turns back northeast going onto the final stretch of the track slightly down hill to an opening that marks the end of the sanctioned MVUM road. Users must turn around and head back out the way they came in, or enjoy the Bluegrass FS 3528 on the way.
Difficulty
Grassy Hollow is given a 2/10 base rating for having a splash depth water crossing in the valley, featuring natural rock poking out at the surface, coarse natural gravel, and loose 6-10" cobbles. The hills also feature mild erosion and rutting, with the flatter section on the ridge top having potential surface mud and small water collection spots. It is also safe to expect all the gravel road complications, such as potholes, washboarding, and mounding of the gravel. Difficulty can increase in times of wet conditions, rainy seasons, and through a lack of maintenance or heavy use.
