Trail Overview
The Berthiaume Trail is one of the longer trails in the area and is a great choice for anyone looking for a little bit of everything. What starts out as an easy ride gradually changes as you travel deeper into the forest, bringing mud, water, rocks, hills, and increasingly narrow trail sections along the way.
The trail begins with an easy ride into the forest before reaching areas where logging activity has changed the terrain. These sections can become noticeably muddier, especially after rain. As you continue farther down the trail, you'll come across a low, wet area where the trail begins to narrow. Here you'll find mud ruts, standing water, and eventually a water crossing that you'll need to work your way through.
After the muddy sections, the trail changes character again. The terrain becomes more rocky as the trail begins climbing into the hills. The route winds between tall trees and thick vegetation, eventually narrowing into more of a single-lane road. From here, the trail becomes increasingly interesting, with a combination of climbs, descents, rocks, uneven ground, and tighter sections that require more attention behind the wheel.
The farther back you travel, the more rugged the terrain becomes. The rocky surface and uneven trail make for a fun drive as you work your way up and down the hills. The long, winding route keeps changing enough that you never quite know what the next section will bring.
After working your way through the rocks, hills, and steeper grades, the trail eventually opens into a clearing, marking the end of the route. The Berthiaume Trail is considerably longer than many of the other trails in the area, but the variety is what makes it worth the time. With mud and water at the beginning, followed by rocky hills, narrow wooded sections, and steep grades farther in, this trail provides a little bit of everything and is well worth adding to your day of exploring the Fond du Lac area.
