South Deer Trail

South Deer Trail is a bidirectional trail within the Traverse City Forest Management Unit. Located between 3rd Creek Trail and Plagany Trail, this trail is easily accessible. You can combine this trail with some of the others in the area to make for a fun adventure. Most of the trail is a combination of dirt and sand with a few sections of overgrowth on the surface. Starting out, the forest is more dense, with a lot of overgrowth and low-hanging trees. Shortly after, you'll make a turn as the trail becomes more sandy and rutted, with some larger ruts and water holes spanning the trail. This is where you'll be greeted by an awe-inspiring section of towering pine trees. It's incredible to see such amazing and beautiful nature in our national forests. As you continue traversing, the trail narrows again with more overgrowth before the finish. Like most Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause downed trees, washouts, & mud holes. Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with limited places to pass. The trail finishes at Plagany Trail, where you can easily get out to one of the main roads or continue along on your journey. As always, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails! This is not a difficult trail at all, but it still contains lots of fun with plenty of scenic views. Regardless of the conditions, this is a fantastic through trail!
