Trail Overview
Old Forest Trail is a typical Michigan two-track bidirectional trail within the Traverse City Forest Management Unit. Located between Pine Canopy Trail and Hendrickson Trail, this trail is easily accessible. Most of the trail surface consists of dirt and sand, with the second half of the trail being quite overgrown and confusing to navigate if you didn't have onX to guide you. Starting out, you'll begin right off with a pretty easy dirt/sand track that twists and turns. Now this trail was pretty bumpy due to side-by-side ruts, but don't let that deter you! We feel the same way about those bumpy/jarring trails that side-by-sides tend to create from their tires, but it does get better. Sometimes it even makes for some interesting whoops along the trail, so keep that in mind before you judge. At the end of the day, we are all collectively out here just trying to have a good time. The remainder of the trail is the section that can get pretty confusing. Keep to your onX map and don't veer off the trail! As you continue traversing, you'll be encompassed in a section of dense forest with a canopy of trees all around and a trail that almost seems like it disappears. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause downed trees, washouts, & mud holes. Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with limited places to pass. The end of this trail connects to Hendrickson Trail, so if you haven't checked that out, be sure to do so. As always, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails! This trail is not at all difficult, but still gives access to other great recreation and contains plenty of scenic views. Regardless of the length or conditions, this is a good trail for all to check out.
