Trail Overview
FS 8479 is a quick out-and-back trail that is scenic in its own ways. Located within the Manistee National Forest off South County Line Road, this trail is easily accessible. Starting from the southern end right off South County Line Road, you'll start out on a dirt/gravel road in the lush trees. You'll weave through those trees alongside the lush vegetation edging the trail. Be sure to take it all in. This is such an interesting trail with all the different elevation changes. That in and of itself makes for a very cool trail. Shortly after, you'll enter a thicker section of the forest, bringing a really different vibe and mood to the route. There are many different things to find along this trail. I thoroughly enjoyed getting out and being able to be higher up than the Jeep. It was such a different feeling. Please TREAD LIGHTLY so future generations can enjoy these public spaces. Like most of Michigan's trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. We came across quite a few mud holes along this trail, so definitely come prepared! This is not a difficult trail at all, but it contains a lot of beauty and gives access to other great trails nearby. The northern end of the trail finishes at a parking area for the Little Manistee River. It looked like the trail continued on at one point or another, but there are now wooden posts that keep you from doing that, so be respectful of that. Regardless of the conditions of this trail, it's a wonderful route to check out!
