Trail Overview
This is considered the third most difficult route down to the Arkansas River sandbar, and while it is not the most extreme, it still demands respect. The descent is steep enough to put your vehicle at a near-vertical angle, requiring four-wheel drive, solid ground clearance, and enough horsepower to safely climb back out. At the bottom, where the trail meets the sandbar, there is roughly a one-foot drop. However, this section is highly unstable, as the river constantly reshapes the sand, making it deeper or shallower over time. Before committing, it’s crucial to step out and inspect the base of the hill to ensure the sandbar is stable and passable and that water levels are low enough.
Difficulty
This trail is challenging due to its steep, near-vertical descent and the unstable sandbar at the bottom. It requires 4WD, good ground clearance, and sufficient power. Changing river conditions mean the drop-off may deepen without warning, making inspection essential. Only experienced drivers should attempt it.
History
This park was formerly known as Sandy Bottoms, and longtime visitors may still refer to it by that name. The access road and staging area have evolved over time, but it remains a well-known local spot for off-road events and community rides.
