Trail Overview

This deceptively fun out-and-back drive branches west from Winding Stair Gap Road in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. The surface is gravel, rock, and red Georgia clay and runs through dense forest along its namesake Jones Creek. The rushing water can be heard with the windows down. 4WD is recommended, especially when rainfall makes the going slippery. There may also be running water in ruts along or across the trail in some spots. Some stretches have steep drops down to the creek on one side. Wildlife including bears, deer, and wild turkeys may be seen. Jones Creek Campground offers primitive sites. The trail crosses Jones Creek and continues on the far side but soon ends at a private property boundary. Cell service is an occasional one-bar at best, so use the offline maps feature before you go. Little traffic was seen on a Sunday morning. There are no structures or restrooms. Airing down isn't necessary but will give a smoother ride. As with any heavily wooded trail--especially an out and back where you could be blocked in--it's a good idea to have some means of clearing a tree. A chainsaw is best but at least a strap to pull it far enough over to get by is highly recommended.

Difficulty

This trail would be a 2.5 if decimals were available. It primarily fits the 2 criteria however the potential for rain to cause slippery conditions and/or a deeper than 12" water crossing near the end slightly increases the difficulty.

The trail to Jone Creek Campground has deteriorated since last year. No issues with traction with full time AWD but did notice some SUV’s struggling in certain sections with ruts that have developed. Past the main camping area and up the hill it’s gets more technical which why I’d say it’s a 3 instead of 2 overall.

Fun side road with a couple of uneven turns, there were a couple of muddy spots but they weren’t rutted too bad. Towards the end there’s a couple of water crossings and a hill past the campsites that has a few uneven dips and ruts.

Really need side trail. The waterfall was worth the scurry down the hill. A few camp sites most were full (went thru sat afternoon)

Traveled out at 2-3pm on a Friday with the intention to do some dispersed camping. Almost all dispersed campsites were occupied, and we had a bear in / around our site most of the night. Too busy for my taste, but might be good camping early in the week.

Water level was low on creek crossing but camping site was peaceful after we turned around at the private property sign. Great one day trip
