Trail Overview

Relatively easy trail with no serious obstacles, but the route is very overgrown and only one vehicle wide. If you drive a full-size vehicle, prepare for scratches on the vehicle. If you look at a map of Bush Head Gap Road, the map will show that the trail is 1-2 miles longer than shown. However, the forest service put a large berm 2/3 of the way down the trail, making it impassible. Bush Head Gap Road has a camping spot at the end of the trail and a small spot at Hudson Gap. These spots look to have little use other than the occasional backpacker from Benton Mackaye Trail. This trail makes a great detour for a short exploration off the Georgia Traverse.

Rating is subjective, there are some ruts, mostly off camber by 4-8 degrees roll. Places with up to 15-18 degrees roll depending on the line you choose. Couple of rock ledges to climb. Nothing very big. Came after a night of rain, so encountered mud and water. Expect pinstripes

Beautiful views. Nice adventure. A few campsites. The main road ends at a peak with a campsite. Highly equipped, lifted rigs that can self-rescue might be able to proceed beyond this point, but others would need to turn around.

Lots of downed trees from recent storm. I cleared the trail of obstructions. Pretty overgrown, encroaches onto the trail. if a full sized rig be prepared for this with small saplings and possible pinstriping. Some dead falls overhead but able to clear up to my 8.5ft camper on trail without issue.

Nice ride up. Overgrown and tight passage in some places. Met one Jeep on the way down, otherwise was deserted. Want to come back and hike portion of Benton Mackaye trail which crosses.
