Trail Overview

This trail continues from the famous Switzerland Trail on the north side of Gold Hill Road and exits on Sawmill Road. It offers varied rocky terrain similar to the southern Switzerland Trail, with the addition of deep mud holes, scenic views, and an early option to explore the in-and-out Knob Hill trail. Unlike other sections of the Switzerland Trail, this side often becomes impassable in winter due to large snow drifts.

Difficulty

Overall the trail is fairly easy, however, it can have areas where water collects into very deep pools on the trail. Some points are narrow with no good spots to allow passing, so be cautious around corners and curves.

History

The Switzerland Trail in Colorado's Front Range follows the path of a historic narrow gauge railroad from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Initially built in 1883 and expanded until a flood in 1894, the line was revived and gained popularity as a tourist attraction named the "Switzerland Trail." Despite its decline due to harsh winters, the rise of automobiles, and mine closures, the route--spanning about 30 miles and reaching elevations over 9,000 feet--was crucial for transporting ore and tourists through key mining towns like Nederland and Ward. Today, it serves as a popular hiking, biking, and 4x4 trail known for its scenic views and gentle grades.

Came down from the Peak to Peak Hwy and went towards Gold Hill Rd. I think the 3/10 rating is an average of the smooth end and the rough end. The first part was considerably more challenging than the “normal” Switzerland trail. Somewhat loose and rutted at first and much tighter in the trees. The end towards Gold Hill road was much smoother and wider

It says to take the sickle entrance go further until sugar loaf entrance. Going to the suggested trail takes to to the town gold hill and pulling a trailer is unsafe. Sugarloaf entrance is safer

As others have mentioned, this is a considerable step up from the rest of Switzerland Trail. There are a couple steep climbs and very rocky sections. I think it may be underrated, but we got two lifted Subarus through, so there's that.

Some of the pictures you do see don't match to what the trail is turned into.

The snow and ice was minimal as was the mud. Easy peasy today. The one water/mud hole was only about 6" deep.

The trail was super fun! It was my 3rd time ever off roading, did the first part of Switzerland trail a few weeks ago. This is significantly harder than the main Switzerland trail. The last 1/4 of the trail has very large rocks and is somewhat challenging to get through if you are a beginner. The water was not very deep in the picture. Overall it was a lot of fun! It definitely is a jump in the right direction if you are a beginner wanting to take on a challenge, can be intimidating towards the end! A few spots were tight in my mid-sized truck, I think a full size truck might really struggle on some of the turns and narrow passages. Non of these pictures include the larger rock section towards the end.

Pretty Easy trail but bumpier than expected. Did the whole thing from the south. A few tougher offshoots.

Such a fun fantastic trail for a little experienced driver. Wouldn't suggest for super newbie like south Switzerland. Definitely 33s+ with high clearance required. Airing down is a must. Super rocky terrain most of the way. steep up hills. especially at the end. 4 low and aggressive all terrain is required for the end of the trail I think. But overall great trail. Would recommend

Was the only one on the trail. Definitely a bit rocky in some areas that did require some patience but nevertheless great views!

Coming in from Left Hand Canyon, there is a loose rocky bit, from this direction, mostly downhill and not too rough, going up especially on a big adv bike, would be a little more complex. In my opinion, the trail was “perfectly wet”, a few puddles for some good splashes, but dry enough for good traction. Wet enough for reduced dust. There was on big mud hole that was deeper than I thought, about 14 inches of water (didn’t measure), just judging where it hit my boots. Overall, relatively easy trail. I’m not sure I’d do it in a stock 4x, but saw a gent in a Porsche SUV driving it.

The trail is mostly flat but narrow with overgrown foliage on both sides as well as intermittent puddles from recent rains. The final section of the trail becomes much more technical, with steep grades, large rocks, and roots throughout. A low gear was very helpful here, and I would recommend a this trail for vehicles without a crawl gear and decent ground clearance.

95% of this trail is level one or so with mainly dirt road with some moguls and stones. It could be done easily in any Subaru. The trail could use some maintenance with the washboarding and washouts but otherwise is pretty easy. that is until you get to the very end where it suddenly turns steep and extremely rocky and becomes technical. I can't imagine any Subaru making it up. I needed my four-wheel low and locker. Between level 3 and 4 there.
