Trail Overview
Chipmunk Gulch is a short, scenic route near Ward, Colorado, perfect for beginner offroaders and those looking for a quick mountain getaway with great camping. Stretching approximately 0.7 miles through the Arapaho National Forest, this dirt trail sits at an elevation of around 9,000 feet and offers minimal elevation change of under 50 feet. The trail is rated a 3 out of 10, meaning it is accessible to most high-clearance four-wheel-drive SUVs, trucks, and SxSs, though it does feature some deep ruts and off-camber sections that will test a stock vehicle's suspension flex.
Starting from Gold Lake Road (USFS Road 376), the trail winds through dense pine forest before leading to a scenic clearing. Early-season travelers should be prepared for lingering snowbanks that can persist into mid-April or later, adding an extra layer of challenge to the journey. At the end of the route, offroaders are rewarded with a primitive campsite that boasts panoramic views of the surrounding Rocky Mountain peaks, making it an excellent spot to set up camp or enjoy a lunch break.
