Trail Overview

Stony Pass will take you from Silverton to Highway 149. The Jeep trail is relatively easy, but it is 38 miles long and the section from Kite Lake to the Rio Grande Reservoir (10 miles) could be more exciting. From there, Highway 149 is well-graded. The more interesting place to spend your time is west of Kite Lake. Along the descent on the east side of Stony Pass, you can see small streams along the trail. These are streams starting at the Continental Divide and they are the headwaters of the Rio Grande River. As you start up the west side, watch for what is left of the Buffalo Boy aerial tramway with a few tram buckets still attached. The Buffalo Boy trail will take you to the upper end of the tramway. The wildflowers are fantastic on the west side of the pass, if you are there at the right time of the year, which is a bit later in the season than most of the San Juans. Sheep will be grazing all the high country at certain times through the summer. Stony Pass is 12,592' in elevation.

Trail was open all the way to the top. As a group, we didn't go beyond the top. Roads out of Silverton and the lower stretches were quite Dusty. High elevation snowpack is melting fast and wildflowers are getting an early start.

Trail was very damaged, multiple fallen trees we had to clear, very rocky. Watch out for sharp rocks slashing your sidewall. I would recommend you air down, if you slash a sidewall and need to swap tires. You will not find much flat terrain to get it done.

We ( My friends and family were in a RAV4 ) started the trail after a rainy evening the night before.. The first half of the trail is very rocky, definitely worth airing down. Once we hit the higher elevations, it was relatively fine. weather was great, and there were a mix of side by sides, motorcycles and UTV's on the trail There are some excellent places to boondock as well.

Great trail. Coming from Silverton in the west it starts with climbs along a couple of narrow shelf roads. Once you’re over Stony Pass you drop into a beautiful valley with dozens of campsites along the Rio Grande and Bear Creek. There’s a rough and rocky descent after the Timber Hill area, which feels like it goes on forever. Once you rejoin the Rio Grande there are dozens more great campsites all the way east to right before the reservoir. Full size truck would be fine. A small off road trailer is doable, but not much fun at times!

Really good views timber hill is the only hard part but if you go slow you can crawl up it pretty easy. Also the Silverton side near the bottom are some tighter shelf roads.

Timber hill has tight off camber rocky sections and steep scree climbs with some shark fins and loose rocks that can make traction difficult.

Lots of dislodged rocks, has had heavy traffic we just caught it at a good time. Getting heavier over the coming weekend. The way down on the Rio Grand Side had several spots with nothing but rocks that require all your attention if you are in a stock setup. Mama doesn't like it if you tear up her ride😎

Trail is washed out by snow melt at the very top of the pass. Ditch is about waist deep in the middle and about 5 feet wide. Also, the plow couldnt cross, so the Atlantic side has quite a bit of snow bank still.
