Trail Overview

Maggie Gulch provides a highly accessible, scenic mountain drive for stock four-wheel-drive vehicles and OHVs looking to explore the historic high country of the San Juan Mountains near Silverton, Colorado. Spanning approximately 4.1 miles, this route climbs over 2,100 feet from its intersection with County Road 2 to its end point at nearly 11,866 feet above sea level. The trail carries a technical rating of 3, featuring a well-maintained dirt and rocky gravel surface with steady climbs that are manageable for high-clearance stock SUVs. Throughout the drive travelers are treated to panoramic views of alpine basins, dramatic peaks and vibrant summer wildflower displays. The route terminates near the historic remains of the Intersection Mill, which was constructed in the 1890s during the Colorado gold rush and offers a tangible connection to the region's mining past. From the end of the motorized trail visitors can embark on foot to access a network of hiking trails, including the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and a short, steep hike to Crystal Lake. Given the high-elevation environment, the trail is generally open and passable from late June through September.

Great trail! It was our first time riding in the mountains and I’m glad we chose this trail to warm us up. It was the most beautiful view at the end. We passed a few jeeps and pick ups, nice places to pull over and pass. Thank you to the guy at the start who taught us the riding hand signals, those are very helpful to know!
