Trail Overview
Branching directly off Route 504, Saw Mill is a highly scenic, 5.5-mile backcountry transit that climbs aggressively into the remarkably dense, high-elevation forest of the Escalante region. As off-roaders ascend into the wilderness, they are immediately enveloped by a beautifully shaded canopy consisting of towering green pines and massive stands of vibrant aspens. This remote and wonderfully tranquil setting is highly popular for local hunting trips and permitted wood collection, offering numerous secluded dispersed campsites tucked away safely on both sides of the heavily wooded track. Because of the high elevation and persistent natural shade, the environment retains significant moisture year-round; drivers will frequently encounter water-filled puddles and soft, sloppy sections even during extended dry spells. Amidst the changing, rugged terrain, the thick tree line beautifully opens up to reveal a remarkably large, perfectly flat grassy campground. This hidden meadow provides a spacious, highly welcoming, mud-free staging area for off-road groups to gather, camp, and relax.
Difficulty
Saw Mill confidently earns a Level 4 technical rating due to its remarkably slick, ever-changing surface conditions and steady, rocky inclines. Throughout the 5.5-mile journey, drivers must actively navigate persistent 5–10-inch muddy ruts and sizable water puddles that severely limit traction. As the trail climbs higher into the forest, the rutted dirt track is frequently interspersed with loose 4–6-inch rocks, adding a jarring, uneven element to the ascent. Successfully conquering this moderately difficult forest transit absolutely requires a true high-clearance vehicle equipped with aggressive all-terrain (AT) tires and a capable 4WD system to safely maintain momentum and prevent getting deeply bogged down in the wet forest soil.
