25 Mesa Road

25 Mesa Road is an ideal scenic route for beginners, families, and offroaders looking for a relaxed journey across the beautiful Uncompahgre Plateau between Delta and Nucla. This wide, well-graded dirt and gravel road is accessible to almost any vehicle, including high-clearance two-wheel-drive vehicles, stock SUVs, SxSs, and dirt bikes under dry conditions. As the road climbs from the valley floor near Delta into the Uncompahgre National Forest, travelers will experience sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding mesas and valleys before dipping into open pine forests. The trail serves as a major artery through the plateau, providing excellent access to numerous side trails, hiking trailheads, and dispersed camping spots. With a very low technical difficulty, the main obstacles encountered are occasional washboards, dust, and oncoming traffic on blind curves. Although the route is generally smooth and straightforward, inclement weather like heavy rain or snow can quickly turn the dirt sections slick and muddy, making four-wheel drive highly recommended during or after storms. The route is best enjoyed from late spring through autumn when the high-country air offers a cool escape from the summer heat and the road is free of snow. Offroaders should remain alert for wildlife such as mule deer and elk crossing the road, and yield to oncoming vehicles on the narrower, winding sections.
